Drone Video Production
There are two video topics everyone is buzzing about: 4K cameras and drones. Let’s talk about the second.
Aerial footage is something that has eluded modestly-budgeted film and video productions since the first camera was mounted on a bi-plane. With the release of the DJI Phantom in 2012, UAVs, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, that incorporate on-board video cameras, have become much more prevalent in the world of video production.
Why? Technological advancements in the design of the copters, improved radio control and the miniaturization of the cameras. UAVs have become increasingly affordable, accessible and therefore popular.
As is typical when any new disruptive technology is released, federal legislation is barely keeping up. The FAA is still months away from drafting safety rules for UAV use, so err on the side of caution if you are planning a shoot.
Remember too to tell a story. Aerial shots for the sake of eye candy alone seems hardly worth the effort or expense. A well-conceived aerial shot can help establish a powerful sense of scale to the opening or closing of any video, but it should fit in organically to that story.
